Pedestrian Access

Pedestrian access control comes in many varieties from interior doors to Homeland Security-driven turnstiles. Bay Cities Automatic Gates specializes in three types of pedestrian access: metal exterior manual gates; automated low energy gates and doors; and automated pedestrian turnstiles and barriers. And for each of these types of doors/gates there are a variety of lock choices.

Lock Types

Stand Alone Locks with Access Control

When access control is needed but wiring to an access control system is impractical, stand alone access control locks are an option. Several we recommend are Schlage Wireless, Alarm Lock and Kaba Ilco.

  • Schlage wireless [PDF 1 download] [PDF 2 download] This Unit is a battery powered lock that can read a card or fob and wirelessly communicate with a head-end access control panel. We have several installations that are working flawlessly at pool and recreational areas where keyed locks have been replaced with fobs.
  • AlarmLock and IEI. AlarmLock and IEI make simpler, stand alone systems that can work with key pads or fobs. Programming is performed by a hand held device.
  • Kaba Ilco. This is the simplest, most durable integrated manual keypad and lock made for rugged outdoor installations.

Magnetic Locks

Magnetic locks have advantages over strike locks (they do not have any moving parts so are hard to break and therefore very durable) and disadvantages (when the power goes out, if they do not have a battery back-up, they "fail unlocked"). We recommend the DoorKing and Securitron models.

Electric Strikes

When the gate is controlled by access control then it will have an electric lock – either strike or magnetic. Many strike locks are reliable but for frequently used gates it is very important that they be very rugged and that the hydraulic closer be of excellent durability to protect the lock from early failures due to excessive banging. We particularly recommend HES, Von Duprin, and Adams Rite models but we work on many.

Mechanical "Keyed" Locks

These are standard door locks and the most cost effective solution. Important considerations are:

  • Durability – and depending on likely abuse the lock may suffer this is an important factor. We recommend heavy duty Schlage or US Lock locks. If vandalism is a concern we recommend a clutched handle.
  • Key management.
  • Lock handle/panic hardware design to meet ADA requirements.

Automated Pedestrian Turnstiles & Barriers

When control of a high volume of people is required (e.g., mass transit systems) or Homeland Security regulations need to be met (e.g., airports, refineries) we recommend the use of Magnetic Automation systems. Please contact us to work out the details with you on the site layout, access control integration and installation particulars.

MPTFull-height turnstiles (MPG full height swing gate) (MPT series full height turnstiles) [PDF download]
Best for high security installations either inside or outside. Please contact us to discuss the best product and installation considerations for your project.

MPPWaist high turnstiles (MPP motorized waist) (Catrax clip or master or plus) [PDF download]
Best for rapid transit, large volume applications. Please contact us to discuss the best product and installation considerations for your project.

MPRPedestrian barriers (MPR Bi-parting) (MPH high door)
Best for rapid transit, large volume of pedestrians. Please contact us to discuss the best product and installation considerations for your project.

Automated Pedestrian Gates & Doors

Many properties require ADA compliant automatic doors. These installations include a low energy door operator, automatic open switch and/or transmitters, and necessary interfaces with the access control phone entry or card reader systems. We service and install many models but strongly recommend LCN’s product line. Please contact us to work out the details of the site layout and installation particulars.

LCN (a brand owned by Ingersoll Rand) makes a line of low energy door openers.

Manual, Self-Closing Ornamental Iron & Chain Link Gates

You can benefit from our long experience installing and servicing metal pedestrian gates. We know exactly how to design a durable and reliable gate. We provide two 3”x3” posts and an over gate transom, heavy duty hydraulic closer, two (not three or four) specialty heavy duty maintenance-free hinges, a heavy duty lock handle and appropriate screening and rings to make it very difficult to reach through to open the gate. This gate can be locked with any of the locking systems we list below.
